Commercial Trucking
Trucking Insurance for Owner-Operators & Fleets
Specialized commercial trucking coverage for California owner-operators and fleets — primary liability, cargo, physical damage, bobtail, and more.
Trucking Insurance Is All We Do — For Trucking.
Commercial trucking is a specialized market. Not every carrier writes it, and not every agent understands it. AJS Insurance Services has over 20 years of experience placing trucking coverage in California — from single owner-operators to growing fleets. We know the markets, the filings, and the coverage gaps that can leave you exposed.
What We Cover
Trucking Coverage Options
Primary Liability
Required by the FMCSA and state regulators, primary liability covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others while operating your commercial vehicle. We find the right limits for your operation and commodity.
- FMCSA & state filing compliance
- Bodily injury & property damage
- Covers all listed drivers
- MCS-90 endorsement available
- Interstate & intrastate operations
Physical Damage
Protect your truck and trailer — your most valuable business asset — against collision, fire, theft, vandalism, and other covered perils. Available as comprehensive, collision, or combined.
- Collision coverage
- Comprehensive (fire, theft, vandalism)
- Agreed value or actual cash value
- Rental reimbursement
- Downtime / loss of income endorsements
Motor Truck Cargo
Covers the freight or commodity you're hauling in the event of loss, damage, or theft. Essential for any owner-operator or fleet hauling goods for hire — and often required by shippers and brokers.
- Cargo loss & damage coverage
- Theft & mysterious disappearance
- Refrigeration breakdown (reefer)
- Earned freight coverage
- Shipper & broker certificate support
Non-Trucking Liability
Also called bobtail insurance, non-trucking liability covers you when you're operating your truck for personal use — not under dispatch. Fills the gap your motor carrier's policy leaves behind.
- Personal use / off-dispatch coverage
- Bobtail & deadhead operations
- Affordable standalone policy
- Pairs with motor carrier coverage
- Required by many lease agreements
Occupational Accident
Owner-operators who are independent contractors are typically not covered by workers' comp. Occupational accident insurance provides medical, disability, and death benefits if you're injured on the job.
- Medical expense coverage
- Temporary & permanent disability
- Accidental death & dismemberment
- Continuous total disability benefit
- Designed for independent contractors
General Liability & Excess
Trucking general liability covers non-auto incidents at loading docks, customer premises, and other locations. Excess / umbrella policies add an extra layer of protection above your primary limits.
- Loading & unloading liability
- Premises & operations coverage
- Products & completed operations
- Umbrella / excess layers available
- Combined single limit options

Common Questions
Trucking Insurance FAQs
How much does trucking insurance cost in California?
Trucking insurance premiums vary widely based on your operation type, commodity, radius, driving record, and equipment value. Owner-operators leased to a carrier typically pay less than those operating under their own authority. Call us for a quote specific to your situation — we shop 50+ carriers to find the best rate.
Do I need trucking insurance if I'm leased to a motor carrier?
Your motor carrier's policy covers you while under dispatch, but it doesn't cover you when operating the truck for personal use (bobtail). You'll also want physical damage coverage for your own truck and trailer, and occupational accident coverage since you're likely not covered by workers' comp as an independent contractor.
What is an MCS-90 endorsement?
The MCS-90 is a federal endorsement required by the FMCSA for carriers operating in interstate commerce. It guarantees minimum liability coverage to the public regardless of policy exclusions. We handle the filing as part of your trucking insurance package.
Can you insure a new authority or startup trucking operation?
Yes. We work with carriers that write new authorities and startup operations. Rates may be higher initially, but we'll find the best available option and help you build a track record that improves your rates over time.
Also Need Business or Personal Coverage?
We handle every line — from commercial business policies to personal home and auto.
